We Asked, Madeline Answered

  • What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?

I have always believed that every student has an innate intellectual curiosity. It's up to me, as an educator, to connect my students' passions with their studies and goals. I love to ask questions that help me learn how to bring out their own desire to learn.

  • What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

I love teaching American history! I am absolutely fascinated by the subject matter and enjoy fostering that in my students. An understanding of history also helps us to know ourselves and the communities around us better. American history also helps us see how the country we live in came to be and is essential for good citizenship.

  • Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.

I remember a student of mine struggling to prove their claim in an essay. I encouraged them to use close reading techniques for their quotations. They soon became clear on how to argue their point successfully, and it was wonderful to see their growth!

  • What makes Hayutin different?

Hayutin takes an individualized approach that truly enables each student to flourish. The thought and attention that goes into every student's needs creates a supportive environment that helps them do their best.
  • What is the favorite thing you've learned from a student?

I had a student research Dorothea Lange for a presentation. My student came up with numerous resources and interesting facts I'd never encountered, like that Lange was initially commissioned by the state of California and the federal government to shoot her photographs.

  • Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?

I love film and media. I am always checking to see what old movies are playing at theaters around LA. I recently watched Martin Scorsese's After Hours for the first time, which was great!
  • What’s something you learned about yourself after high school that you wish you knew back then?

I have learned that prioritizing personal well-being and passions over others' ideas of success is crucial to a happy, balanced life. Knowing this in high school would have helped take some of the pressure off, but I'm happy to have realized this now!
  • What is a stretch you experienced growing up?

Despite majoring in history in college, I found writing research essays to be extremely difficult in high school. I would struggle to come up with a research question and sometimes even change my topic at the last minute. With better time management skills and organization, I was ultimately able to complete a year-long independent research project for my major.
  • If you could tutor any historical figure, who would it be and what would your focus be?

I would tutor Joni Mitchell in any subject, as long as she offered singing and guitar lessons in exchange!

  • What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?

    The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
